“And the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and His anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.” Numbers 11:1

Numbers 11 tells the story of the Israelites’ response to God’s provision and protection. He had brought the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt, gave them a leader in Moses, and promised them a new land flowing with milk and honey. However, the people complained, longing rather for the safety and security of their chains in Egypt. Refusing to believe in the promises of God, the Israelites took matters into their own hands and rebelled against the Lord. This became a theme and cycle for the Israelites: rescue, gratitude, forgetfulness, complaint, rebellion, judgment, repentance, and rescue again. Although God had provided the Israelites all they needed for each day, they still wanted “more” and “better.” Dissatisfied with manna, they demanded meat. Their incessant grumbling angered Moses to the point that he actually longed for his own death (Numbers 11:15).

Meanwhile, God patiently listened to every complaint of the Israelites, and responded in turn by denying them the privilege of entering Canaan, allowing only their children to see the land promised for generations to their forefathers. By forsaking the past blessings of God and accusing Him of ill-treatment, His chosen people forfeited the future grace of God as well.

Our words and actions often mirror those of the Israelites; how often we reject the provision and blessing of our Father, clutching to cheap imitations instead! When we complain, whether to a friend or ourselves, God always hears it. We must keep in mind that He is under no obligation to make future provision for us! The attitude that “we deserve better” will keep us from missing out on God’s richest blessings, just like it did the Israelites. Therefore, it is vitally important that we cease complaining also, choosing rather to look back with gratitude and faith that God will continue His provision into the future! He is trustworthy; He will act on behalf of His children. Let us say with David, “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord;’ I have no good besides you!” (Psalm 16:2)

Imagine today what your life would be like if you committed this week to cease all complaining and arguing, choosing rather to live a life of humble thanksgiving and contentment? Remember, He is listening!
